FAMOUS ARTIST RESEARCH PROJECT

Students explore a wide variety of famous Hispanic Artists. Project can be completed in pairs or individually. Students reproduce one work using authentic materials and then prepare a 7 slide powerpoint presentation to discuss the life and works of their artist. This project is written in both Spanish and English versions so it is suitable for any level of language learners. I have taught it with 7th graders in Spanish I up to Seniors in Spanish IV. Project also contains a grading rubric and a list of 22 famous artists to get students started.

Sugar is the story of a young Dominican baseball talent recruited to play for the Kansas City farm team. It chronicles all the challenges and barriers faced by hispanic athletes and other immigrants trying to assimilate to the American life. This film is excellent and appeals to male students as well as the girls. The movie inspires great discussion and instills compassion for new immigrants trying to adjust while away from family and culture. PG-13 in Spanish with subtitles and in English. Movie guide has 17 chronologically ordered questions and 3 follow up discussion topic. Film is 114 minutes and takes 2 class periods to show.

This movie is best suited for higher level classes. (Spanish III or higher) It carries an R rating for two very brief and innocent nude scenes, but will require a parental release form if your students aren't at least 17. There are 40 questions in Spanish that accompany the film and 7 temas para pensar that follow for class discussion or out of class writing assignments. The movie is in Spanish with subtitles.

This is one of my favourite lessons to do and one I am most proud of. I received an award for this lesson at the state level in a teaching lesson contest. Students work in small groups to replicate, research and interpret a mural by Diego Rivera. I never cease to marvel at how well their work turns out and everyone learns a ton about Diego Rivera. Great end assessment for a unit on art, or as prep for AP/IB programs this lesson is suitable for Spanish III students or higher. Includes commentary on how to execute the project, detailed student explanation, helpful weblinks and readings, list of murals that are suitable for research, helpful thematic vocabulary for students to prepare their written portion.

Repaso de Verbos Contest : Practice grid for Heritage/Advanced Spanish students

Sometimes even heritage learners need a little help with their verbs. This quick review grid gives them the present tense of each verb in different subjects and asks them to come up with the past, conditional and future tense conjugations. I use this as a small group activity and then have them trade papers with another team to correct the errors using my key. Treating it as a contest more than a worksheet works better and allows kids to put their heads together on a pile of irregulars, stem changers and other unusual conjugations. Students in levels IV and V can also benefit from this activity as the subject nouns aren't specified and will force them to look to the endings to figure out the forms. Activity takes about 30 minutes to run and correct, includes an answer key for you and them.

A one page quick description of how to form verbs in the FUTURE tense from infinitives. Native speakers need less rote practice than a traditional Spanish class and this 2 page review will quickly take them through how to make the future and show them the irregular stems. Page two is an opportunity to use the future tense in an essay prompt to describe the world in 30 years. This quiz covers DOP's step by step, starting with filling in the box chart, to identifying DOPs in sentence and replacing them, working with verb pairs, gerunds and finally answering short questions using DOP's. Quiz works best for a level II class that has practiced DOPs extensively or a level III or higher class that is reviewing their usage. (I use this as a review quiz for level IV) Sentences are simple and easy to understand. Quiz is 45 pts and takes half a class period to complete. Answer key is included.

This wonderful Netflix movie tells the story of Ramon's immigration to Germany and how little by little he begins a new life with the help of Angela a retired nurse. The movie is entirely in Spanish and German with English subtitles and would be suitable for either language class. There is one slightly mature scene so its best suited for high school students, as there are suggestions of innuendo. This film addresses the challenges people face both in their home country and assimilating to a new country and is very enjoyable, fluctuating between serious and light hearted scenes. Movie guide contains 19 questions in chronological order. and is available in both English (for lower level or German classes) or Spanish. Film takes two class periods to show. I have marked one question with an asterisk as it pertains to that specific scene if you wish to eliminate it. I showed this film to my Heritage Language students and they really enjoyed it as it was a film with which many Mexican immigrants could identify.

21 chronological questions in both Spanish and English to accompany the film Motorcycle Diaries which chronicles the early life of Che Guevara. This film won awards and is excellent for any level of Spanish or Social Studies. However, one should note that the film carries an R rating for the language that appears in the subtitles. (the English is harsher than the original script) and you will want to obtain parental permission or limit this film to junior and senior students. Movie guide also contains 9 follow up topics for class discussion or independent student writing. Great film! Your students will love it.

This lesson plan on street art in Bogota and other urban cities in Latin America takes students on a journey to explore the messages and meanings of street art murals/graffiti. Students will read about the booming graffiti art trend in Bogota, listen to an interview with a famous street artist, view a short documentary about creating street art, listen to a TED talk in Spanish about different kinds of fonts and then finally create their own piece of street art to communicate a message to their audience. Plan to spend a week exploring the different links and budgeting work time for students to get their creative juices flowing and inspire each other. Full size posterboards cut in half are a good size for students to work with when creating their own mini mural, some ambitious students may request a full size board. I ordered drawing pastels from Amazon to expose students to a new medium but magic markers (or spraypaint if you live in a warm climate and have access to an outdoor workspace) also work well. Students enjoy connecting their own works to what they learned about public art in urban spaces. This lesson is best suited for an AP Spanish V or Heritage Learners class and connects to the theme of Beauty and Aesthetics on the AP test. Download packet contains links to all the videos, free downloadable graffiti fonts, link to the news article, space for students to design their rough drafts and some reflection questions for after they complete their works

This 5 page easy read short story by Sandra Cisneros is so cleverly narrated, easy to read and opens the door to a great discussion around childhood, identity, and personal experiences. I teach this story in my Spanish Heritage Learners Classes, but its suitable for a level IV or higher where students are comfortable with past tense usage. Reading guide includes a couple of questions for pre-reading to get students thinking about their own childhood experiences, then some relational questions where students can form their own connections between characters and items as they read. Finally there is a follow up project with a graphic organizer to help students brainstorm before crafting a poem about themselves at a specific age. Budget 3-4 classes for reading the story, discussion, brainstorming and final project production depending on their level. This step by step lesson plan will guide your Heritage Learner students through an oral presentation on their two (sides of) identities. Many Heritage learners navigate between the world of their parents home country traditions, language, foods while simultaneously functioning the US world of friends, language, fast food, pop culture and social media. This scaffolded project helps them to brainstorm the moments when they feel more one than the other and create a compelling oral presentation for small group setting. Download contains charts for both worlds, guiding questions for reflection, and a rubric for presentation day. Project works best if you allow students at least three days to brainstorm, create slides and the weekend for them to practice.

Powerpoint contains 20 slides of art from various famous Hispanic and spanish artists. In pairs, students imagine they are visiting an art museum and asking about each work of art. (Partner A asks about odd numbered paintings, Partner B evens) Students describe the paintings, their styles and reactions to each painting. This lesson works well with anyone teaching art from Realidades level III or any higher level Spanish class learning about art and art vocabulary. It ties in well with one of the AP prep themes on beauty and aesthetics.I broke the practice into two separate class periods and had students discuss 10 paintings total each day. If you use the powerpoint as a class as opposed to having students download it on their own device, you might want to set a timer for each picture for 2 minutes. Students will be speaking Spanish fast and furious to answer the questions bc their time on each is limited. Practice takes about 20 min.

La Muñeca Menor by Rosario Ferré is a short story full of magical realism. This story is great to teach for a Heritage Learner class or a level IV or higher where students already have a fair vocabulary base in Spanish. Files also contain a supporting powerpoint that provides information about the author, some definitions of key vocabulary and some guiding instructions for students as they read, re-read and discuss the story. Story will take about 4 class periods to teach with thorough comprehension. This powerpoint tells the famous Aesop fable of the Lion and the Mouse. 25 blanks for students to decide preterite or imperfect alternate with slides that contain the answers and rationale for their choices. Students can practice a story together and discuss their choices prior to trying some of my other practice fables as worksheets for homework. Each slide contains 2-3 sentences and is immediately followed by the the answers. This powerpoint would work best early on in the preterite vs imperfect unit after students have been presented with the reasons/concepts for each verb tense. Provides an important step for "guided practice" to reduce frustrations and stimulate discussion before students practice on their own. This 12 question checklist survey about childhood activities and preferences makes a great introduction to the unit on childhood. Students read a series of statements in the imperfect tense and check off any applicable answers. Download also contains a two column vocabulary list of helpful childhood words. Free preview file is a powerpoint that matches the questions, so the day after you assign students the homework you can review the questions together. I like to print a class roster on a grid and copy it for students. Then they can tally their classmates answers to the questions as you call on students to report their responses. Worksheet works best with level II students who have recently begun learning childhood vocabulary (Realidades II and En Español ) and can recognize verbs in the imperfect tense. Powerpoint survey takes about 20 minutes to run in class the next day.

You can teach your students all regular and irregular preterite verb conjugations through this rap song, and you will look hilarious. The lyrics accompany the old RAPPERS DELIGHT song by the Sugarhill Gang. Powerpoint will flash the lyrics on your smartboard so everyone can participate . You will need to download a karaoke version of this old school favourite at Amazon.com and rap out the lyrics as you teach them the verbs. Especially successful in the urban school I taught in as the students recognized the song their parents listened played at home. One of my students favourites!

This powerpoint is a good launch point for beginning to explain the difference between SER and ESTAR. Each question is covered in detail with examples and is followed by 8 photos to practice. There are also opportunities on the slides for students to think out their answers and interact with the teacher. Last slide is 16 vocabulary words where students decide SER or ESTAR for the question. Download also includes graphic organizer for students to take notes as you present. Presentation takes about 30 minutes to complete in a 25 student class.
